Substanz for null grad
A re-design and prototyping project developed by Substanz with and for the German brand Null Grad — focused on 100% plant bio-based, petroleum-plastic-free bags and accessories for urban life.
The brief was to create a practical urban backpack made entirely from biodegradable materials, including next-generation bio-based alternatives. Every component — from the outer shell and lining to the straps, structural elements, and padding — had to be plant-based and fully biodegradable, ideally compostable.
The design needed to be edgy, customizable, lightweight, and functional, with enough space and compartments for everyday urban use.
We also were asked not to use any glue in our work!
Substanz provided consulting and garment development services for the project.
Materials used:
Outer shell: HyphaLite Neo Repel (@hyphalite_isacosm) — a 99% bio-based (1% mineral-based finish), zero-plastic, fully biodegradable leather alternative chosen for its sporty look, durability, lightweight construction, and versatility in finishes and colors.
Inner lining: 100% European hemp canvas sourced from Eco Textiles (@ecologicaltextiles)
Structural materials: LOVR 100% hemp-based composite by German developer Revoltech (@revoltech.official) paired with 100% Portugese cotton padding.
Belts: 100% cotton
Hardware: black-finish hardware and a custom wooden buckle developed for the project.
