Substanz X Null Grad — A Fully Bio-Based Urban Backpack

A re-design and prototyping project by Substanz with German brand Null Grad, focused on creating plant-based, petroleum-plastic-free backpacks and accessories for urban life.

The brief was to create a practical, lightweight backpack using 100% bio-based and biodegradable materials. Every component — from the outer shell and lining to the straps, structural elements and padding — had to be plant-based and fully biodegradable, with compostability as the ideal goal. The design also had to be functional, customizable and spacious enough for everyday urban use.

An additional challenge: no glue could be used in the construction.

Substanz provided material consulting, material selection, sourcing and product development, taking the concept through to physical prototyping and exploring how different biomaterials and sustainable materials could work together in a functional finished product.

Materials

  • Outer shell: HyphaLite Neo Repel by ISA Next Generation Materials — 99% bio-based with a 1% mineral-based finish; zero-plastic and fully biodegradable. Selected for its sporty appearance, lightweight construction, durability and range of possible finishes and colours.

  • Inner lining: 100% European hemp canvas sourced from Eco Textiles

  • Structural material: LOVR, a 100% hemp-based composite by German developer Revoltech

  • Padding: 100% Portuguese cotton

  • Belts: 100% cotton

  • Hardware: Black-finish hardware with a custom wooden buckle developed specifically for the project

The project demonstrates how bio-material sourcing, material selection and prototyping can bring biomaterials and sustainable materials into real-world fashion applications. By combining bio-based vegan leather alternatives with plant-based textiles and components, Substanz helps brands explore circular economy solutions and create functional products for the growing field of environmental fashion — from the first design concept through to a physical product.
