Substanz has been appointed as the sourcing and curation partner for the bio-vegan materials division of the eCommerce platform of IRO Ledermanufaktur.

The store originally specialised in traditional supplies for leather makers and crafters, including tools, threads, trims, and leather itself. However, in response to the saturation of the leather market and a slowdown in leather sales, the owner decided to diversify into bio-leather alternatives. This is where Substanz stepped in, bringing its expertise in next-generation bio-based materials and its established network of material R&D innovators.

The curated selection enables makers and designers to access innovative, environmentally responsible materials in very small minimum order quantities (in some cases starting from A4-sized samples). This approach not only supports independent designers and small brands in accessing cutting-edge materials on viable terms, but also helps material R&D companies expand market adoption of their innovations.

Substanz curates the assortment available through the IRO Ledermanufaktur eCommerce platform according to strict selection criteria:

• Fully biodegradable materials (capable of complete decomposition within approximately one year, without microplastic shedding)
• Minimum 95% bio-based content
• Strong focus on circular materials, including those derived from food or agricultural waste streams
• Use of natural or semi-synthetic linings (such as Lyocell) that maintain biodegradability and circularity principles
• Materials tested to ISO standards aligned with conventional leather durability and performance requirements
• FSC or BCI certification for all virgin plant-based inputs
• FCF-free and Bluesign-certified finishes, particularly for canvas materials
• Use of non-toxic, natural dye systems
• 100% vegan composition
